Is It Really All About The People?

I often hear the phrase “it’s all about the people”. No it isn’t. It’s all about the right people.

I often hear the phrase “it’s all about the people”. No it isn’t. It’s all about the right people.

You have to get the right people on the bus. And if you can’t get this right, then nothing else matters. You just simply won’t be successful in building a great culture. And you won’t be successful in building a successful company.

What do we mean by “right” person? Two things:

1. The skill to be an “A” player in the role they are hired for.

2. A culture fit.

And both are non negotiable. Never hire one without the other.

The key to a successful hire for “skill” fit? Have the right scorecard in place with the right accountabilities, and understand the traits that you are looking for in order to hire someone who will be an “A” player in that role. Furthermore, know HOW to find out if the individual you are hiring has those traits that will make them successful in the role.

The key to a successful hire for “culture” fit? Incorporate your Core Values throughout the hiring process, so that it is clear what you stand for and in fact, so strong that the right person will be “attracted” to work there and the wrong person will be “repelled” from working there. Second, learn how to discover if the person is truly aligned with your core values.

As our franchise company, Nurse Next Door, reached its 10 year anniversary this year, this is the one learning that has made all of the difference.

  1. couldn’t agree more. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been brought in to “fix” people who don’t meet the two basic criteria that you’ve laid out… well… you know the rest.
