Welcome to the Part 2 where we highlight Nurse Next Door Chatham Tina and Dakota Hodgson’s entrepreneurial journey. You can check out Part 1 of their blog where the mother and daughter duo discuss their background. In this blog, we ask them questions about their efforts in engaging their community as they are a few weeks into their new business!
Chatham-Kent and Lemington seem like a very community-centric town, what’s it like?
T&D: Chatham-Kent and Leamington is a cluster of small towns side by side over a large geographical area. That being said, the amount of community support we have received is incredible! Our local Economic Development team has given us so much support such as featuring us in a news release and advice on how to approach this unique area. Everyone knows everyone – and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
What need is there for home care in your community?
T: A few years ago, my mom had a fall and fractured her pelvis in two places. Almost everyone I chatted within our community had their own story of a loved one needing care and experiencing the stress of not only managing their own day-to-day life as well as being a caregiver for that loved one. As a daughter, I wanted to do everything I could to make sure my mom was taken care of and know that others feel the same for their loved ones. Nurse Next Door gives that peace of mind to people just like me.
Now that you’ve launched, what are your top 3 focuses?
- Hiring amazing caregivers
- Finding a rhythm in owning a small business
- Making ourselves known in our community by getting the word out!
We are thinking about these things on a daily basis and you’ll see us on Facebook promoting what we have to offer both to clients and caregivers!
What do you see as your biggest challenge you need to overcome? What are some steps you will take towards it?
T: We anticipate our biggest challenge will be raising awareness about Nurse Next Door in our community. We want people to not only know us but to count on us! We’re visiting doctors, hospitals, and agencies as well as meeting with seniors, attending community events and doing random acts of kindness in our community every chance we get. We are always driving our pink car and hope people are spotting us!
We saw you guys put on a great Discovery Day! For those looking to potentially apply and work for you, what makes you stand out as an employer?
D: First and foremost, our talent is caring. That means that we see seniors and home care as more than just tasks. It also means we see our employees as more than just numbers! As a whole, we treat people as people with lives as vibrant and significant as our own. We have longer visit minimum times so that each employee can create a real bond with their clients – letting caregivers get back to caring.
Are there any big community events/activities you’ll be hosting/participating in? Or any ideas down in the horizon? We’d love to get some teasers! 🙂
D: You will see our bright pink car at all the awesome events Chatham-Kent puts on. You can also find us spreading joy through random acts of kindness (think cake pops and coffee on us)! Also, each quarter, you’ll find us at the 100 Women Who Care Chatham event we sponsor, where a group of amazing women team up to make a difference locally. Who knows what else is to come – we are always looking for more ways to get out in the community!
