1. Give us a quick run down on who you are, where you are from, how long you have been in business with Nurse Next Door?

My name is Kaylene Landers, I am a Registered Nurse. I am married to my husband Chris, we have 3 boys ages 15, 12, and 10. Chris and I are from Alexandria, Va, which is about 2.5 hours north of where we live now. The USCG brought us to Hampton Roads in 2010, and we have been here ever since. We decided to bring Nurse Next Door to Hampton Roads last year, and we opened our doors on November 19, 2019.

  1. What success have you had in your business that you would like to share right now?

We have learned so much in the last year! But I think our biggest success is that we have managed to grow every month since we got our first client in January. COVID has really challenged us to get creative with marketing for both clients and employees, and although it has not been easy we have been able to adapt and problem solve to overcome the adversity.

  1. Are there any opportunities or challenges that you have discovered, and like any business, needed to pivot or overcome?

Staffing has been a big challenge for us. Our state had a very large weekly unemployment rate that did not end until July 31st, which was very hard to compete with. We have had to work twice as hard to find the right people for our team. We have spent the last month really taken a dive into our processes and numbers to see where we can improve. That has led to several changes in process for us, but I am optimistic that the implementation of our improved system is going to help us increase staffing in the coming weeks.

  1. How are you and your team bringing #HappierAging to life for your community right now?

We have some great events lined up for the fall. We have partnered with a local pharmacy to do a drive through flu shot clinic, which will be in early November. We are participating in some holiday parades, and have spoken to several facilities about ways that we can get their seniors to watch the parades while they have snacks and goodies provided by us. We are also planning gift baskets with individualized items for our clients for Christmas. We are passionate about each client having their own unique experience with happier aging at every visit as well. Our client’s living their best life is at the center of everything we do.

  1. What’s next for your Nurse Next Door location?

There are so many things I want to do next, but I think at the top of the list is expanding into the part of our territory that we have not touched yet. There are areas where we will have to build teams due to location and distance, which will be a challenge and will require a lot of attention. In the coming months that will definitely be the focus.
