How This Accountant is Living the American Dream

Starting and running a successful business is a desire that runs deep in the principles the U.S. was founded on.

The American Dream is defined as: “The ideal that every U.S. citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative”.

According to Forbes, freelancers account for 35% of the U.S. workforce or 55 million workers in the United States. It’s anticipated this number will reach 43% of the workforce by 2020 and this number is continuing to grow every day. It is reported that there are around 27 million Americans starting or running a new business. Entrepreneurship has become a trend, evident in the popularity of the reality show Shark Tank, contributions to the entrepreneurial population with many striving to become a self-made success.

Before Nurse Next Door, Kiran had been in the tax and audit industry as a Certified Public Accountant for over 15 years, and held various management positions at the University of California and with the State of California.

Being a business owner was not a new experience for Kiran. She had owned a tax franchise back in 2007 and managed 20+ employees. This gave her the opportunity to connect with clients and she has since retained 100 clients that she still services every year.

Kiran is passionate about working with people and being able to help others. She was able to learn first hand about the industry from her cousin who works in home health and hospice care, which really sparked her interest in pursuing a franchise opportunity in home care. In 2015, she inquired with two other competitors before learning about Nurse Next Door and once she found the brand, she knew that it was the perfect match.

However, 2015 wasn’t the right time for Kiran to start her own business. Nurse Next Door’s bold pink brand image was still ingrained in her mind. In 2016, she reconnected with Nurse Next Door when she was ready to pursue her American Dream. Kiran says she has learned that things have a way of working out and no one should ever lose hope, “It really does come down to having faith and the right attitude. Things may not always happen on our time, but they do happen for a reason which in hindsight you can appreciate.

What stood out to Kiran about Nurse Next Door?

The Brand

She was instantly drawn to Nurse Next Door’s bold images of happiness in aging. As part of the Franchise Discovery Process with Nurse Next Door, she visited HeartQuarters (HQ) in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She was delighted to see that the company culture was self-led, friendly with a positive “work hard, play hard” attitude and knew that she wanted to be a part of it.

Happier Aging

Nurse Next Door’s unique concept of Happier Aging stood out to Kiran. “I believe that everyone should have the option of being able to stay home and around their loved ones.” This is especially true when you see an older couple where one person requires care. It’s important to keep them together at home because often when couples are separated and put into nursing homes, it leads to depression, anxiety and isolation. Studies show that amongst seniors who live in care facilities have a rate of depression as high as 44%!

Making a Difference in the Elk Grove Community

Kiran is ecstatic to be able to serve the seniors in her local community every single day, leading her Care Team, consisting of Care Designers and caregivers to provide home care. Their senior clients can continue to live in the comfort of their own homes and continue doing things that once made them happy with the assistance of a caregiver.

Kiran says that every work day is different and that being a Nurse Next Door franchise owner isn’t a 9-to-5 gig. She works closely with Rachael, her Care Designer to provide WOW customer experience to their clients and also work together on recruiting and marketing. She says the most rewarding thing at the end of each day is to know that they went above and beyond for their clients, making a positive impact on their clients’ and the clients’ families’ lives.

In Elk Grove, Nurse Next Door participates and gives back to the local community. In the summer of 2017, Kiran and her team visited a local facility where victims of the Napa fire temporarily lived. “It was a wonderful feeling to bring an act of kindness to those in distress and something as simple as ice cream put a smile on peoples’ faces.” says Kiran.

Nurse Next Door Elk Grove also had lots of fun at various events. The team has sponsored the Alzheimer’s Walk, a Masquerade ball and they also baked and served pink frosted cupcakes to veterans at their local senior residential community on Veteran’s Day!
