Social distancing. Self-isolation. Lockdowns. Bubbles. Who could have possibly anticipated what the next year had in store for the world as the clock struck midnight on December 31, 2019? While the last 12 months have certainly been unprecedented, one thing remained certain throughout – our unwavering commitment to keeping seniors safe and happy in the comfort of their own homes.

From a business perspective, it has been an incredibly busy 12 months for Nurse Next Door. As other businesses across our communities were forced to close, at least temporarily, our franchisees had the opportunity to continue to build – all while caring for clients and creating jobs in their communities. As the public perception of home care continued to shift, we saw a surge in families calling in as they became aware of the role home care played in ensuring the health and safety of their loved ones.

We’d like to share some of the highlights as we wrap up 2020:

Media

Throughout the year, we had the pleasure of sharing our stories with multiple media outlets, here are a few highlights:

Our VP of Customer Experience, Veronica Tissera spoke with The Vancouver Sun to share her insights on the significant increase in demand for home care due to COVID-19.

Then, our VP of Global Franchise Development, Arif Abdulla joined 1851 Franchise Magazine to talk about Nurse Next Door’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact it had on the business at the time.

June saw our President and CEO Cathy Thorpe featured on CBC’s The National nightly news program. Cathy spoke about where home care sits within the alternatives to long term care, and shared her story with over 700,000 viewers across Canada.

Cathy also spoke with Sarah Stockdale on episode 3 of The Globe and Mail’s The Growth Effect podcast, Going from Customer to CEO. Taking over the reins, and the expectations that go along with that isn’t for everyone. But it was for Cathy! Listen as she shares her thoughts on what it’s like to step into a leadership role at an already successful company, and the results that followed.

Franchise Development

Making Lives Better in new communities

As an essential service, we showed no signs of slowing down. 2020 made it clear that whether it’s in times of economic boom, or times of recession, home care isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. Throughout the year, our newest Franchisees launched their Nurse Next Door businesses in 14 new locations across North America and 6 in Australia, with several more getting ready to launch in early 2021. We’re excited to see how they’ll be making lives better in their communities.

Caregiver to Multi-Unit Franchise Owner

Earlier this year we shared the inspirational story of Dayna Frame, Franchisee of Nurse Next Door Kamloops and Victoria. Dayna first joined Nurse Next Door as a Caregiver 11 years ago. Dayna worked her way up to a management position, before being presented with an opportunity to buy her own franchise in Kamloops. This is where Dayna’s entrepreneurial spirit began to shine – she achieved milestone after milestone as a business owner. After several years of supporting the community in Kamloops, Dayna expanded her horizons even further and took over Nurse Next Door Victoria, Saanich and Esquimalt in late 2020 and hasn’t looked back.

Dayna’s story is testament to Nurse Next Door’s Caregiver to Business Owner initiative. Caregiver to Business Owner works by providing Caregivers with flexible options when it comes to purchasing their own Nurse Next Door Franchise. Some of our most successful Franchisees, like Dayna, started as a Caregiver before making their mark in the world of entrepreneurship. Caregiver to Business Owner is our way of recognizing the incredible work they do by removing barriers to business ownership and supporting their career goals.

Bold Pink Club

Every year, we celebrate the achievements of our top-performing Franchisees by appointing them to the Bold Pink Club, and this year was no different! The Bold Pink Club recognizes locations that have achieved outstanding success in leading teams, developing people and delivering great results while Making Lives Better in their communities.

Usually, the newest Bold Pink members head off to Las Vegas for three days of celebrations. In the spirit of keeping things COVID safe, this year’s celebration took place online with a virtual toast, and each Bold Pink inductee received a celebration package including $2500, A Bold Pink Club award and a VIP gift basket filled with premium items.

Congratulations to:

Dayna Frame – Kamloops, BC

Heather and Robert Green – Dallas North, TX

Syed Rizvi – Brantford, ON

Nikki and Dee Ghurman – Tri Valley, CA

Kiran Samaran – Elk Grove, CA

Susan and Wendy Scott – Burnaby, BC

We’ll be sharing the stories of each of the new members over the coming months – stay tuned!

Awards

Last but not least, we’d like to share some good news about our own success! Our team works hard, and this year we were delighted to receive the following recognition and awards:

Ranked in The Globe and Mail Canada’s Top Growing Companies

Business in Vancouver – CEO of the Year Awards 2020 – Award of Distinction

Business Woman – Top 100 Influential Women in Franchising

Ranked in Entrepreneur Franchise 500 – again!

And that’s a wrap!

There’s no denying that 2020 has been a wild ride for everyone across the globe. Throughout it all, we remained on the front foot and stayed true to our commitment of disrupting the home care industry, and doing it well. So what does this mean for 2021? Well, as the COVID-19 vaccine makes its way into our communities, an exciting post-pandemic world is on the horizon. Pre-covid, the in-home care industry was already experiencing rapid growth and was forecasted to grow to $225 billion by 2024, driven by the ever-increasing aging population. Now, as the world sees the importance of home care in a whole new light, these numbers are only set to increase.

As 2020 draws to a close, we’re seeing an increase in enquiries from potential Franchisees who see home care for the opportunity it is. In fact, our Franchise Development team is rounding out the year with a bang, with a whopping 5 Final Interview Days in one week! It’s an exciting time for the industry and we’re looking forward to sharing the stories and successes of our Franchisees and the difference they will continue to make in their communities in 2021.
